The Nicholas Poussin Gallery
You've probably never heard of him, but he was perhaps the greatest painter of the 17th century. At least I like him a lot. I first learned of him in the book "Holy Blood, Holy Grail", which deals with a great mystery. Anyway, a couple of Nick's paintings figure into it.
The Summer. A nice landscape with nothing mysterious.
The Shepards of Arcadia. Apparently his most mysterious painting. Besides the mystery of the subject itself, and the words carved in it, there's all sorts of hidden geometric stuff.
Et in Arcadia Ego - Another one of his mysterious ones. Same basic scene as the above, this was the first, and was apparently based on a real tomb. Also appears to be based on a painting of the same name by the famed painter Guercino. (Also contains a self portait of Poussin)
Landscape With Polyphemus - Apparently depicts part of the Odyssey, which Odysseus and his crew steal cattle from the Cyclops Polyphemus. This one is based on the 'Black and White' landscape 2 tile painting in the Sims
Landscape With Polyphemus - Apparently depicts part of the Odyssey, which Odysseus and his crew steal cattle from the Cyclops Polyphemus. This version is based on the "Still Life Fruit" 1 tile painting in the Sims, and doesn't look quite a nice as the above.
Apollo and Daphne - The Greek god Apollo, a woman (presumably Daphne), what looks like a lot of cupids. Presumably from a greek myth that is obscure enough for me not to be able to recall it offhand.
Funeral of Phocion - Phocion was an ancient Greek general, I think. (Added August 8th, 2000)
Mars and Venus - Another mythological couple, though this time they're Roman (Added August 12th, 2000) |
